A sales call script is not a speech to read word for word. It is a short plan for the call: how you open, which questions you ask, what you say when the prospect pushes back, and the next step you ask for. Reps who use one sound more relaxed, not less, because they are not inventing the structure while they talk.
This guide gives you the five parts every sales call needs, seven sales call scripts for the calls small teams make every day (cold call, inbound lead, discovery, demo, follow-up, referral and voicemail), discovery questions, answers to common objections, and a free calculator that turns your sales quota into the number of calls your team needs each day.
Last checked November 2026. Sales calls to consumers and to numbers on Do Not Call lists are regulated: see the calling rules section below before a large calling campaign. This page is general information, not legal advice.
The 5 parts of a good sales call script
- Opening (10 seconds). Your name, your company and why you are calling. A clear reason for the call earns more patience than a clever line.
- Permission or hook. One sentence that makes the next minute worth it for them: a problem you solve for people like them, or the thing they asked about.
- Questions. Two to four open questions about how they work today and what it costs them. This is most of the call.
- Short value statement. Connect what they just told you to one thing you do. One sentence, in their words, not a feature list.
- Next step. Ask for one clear, small commitment with a date: a 20 minute demo on Thursday, a call with the decision maker, a trial started today.
Every script below follows these five parts. Change the words until they sound like you, and keep the order.
Seven sales call scripts
1. The cold call
[If yes] Most [role]s I speak with tell me [problem] costs them [time or money]. How are you handling that today?
[Listen, ask one follow-up] Based on what you said, it might be worth a 20 minute look at how [company] does [result]. Would Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon work better?
For gatekeepers, cold call openers by industry and more objection answers, see our cold calling script templates.
2. The inbound lead callback
[If yes] Great. What made you look into [topic] today?
[Listen] Got it. And how are you doing it right now?
[Listen] Thanks, that helps. The fastest way to see if we fit is a short walkthrough with your own [list, data, use case]. I have [time] today or [time] tomorrow. Which works?
Speed matters more than wording here: call within minutes, not hours. Our cold calling statistics page has the research on lead response time.
3. The discovery call
To start, can you walk me through how [process] works on your team today?
[Listen, then use 3 or 4 of the discovery questions below]
Let me make sure I have it right: [summary of their problem, goal and timeline]. Did I miss anything?
[If confirmed] Then the next step I would suggest is [demo with your team / trial / proposal]. Who else should be part of that?
4. The demo call opening
[Listen] Then I will show you exactly those two things and skip the rest. Stop me anytime. At the end, let us take five minutes to decide together whether a trial makes sense.
A demo that starts with their problem, not with your logo slide, is shorter and closes more often.
5. The follow-up after a proposal
[If no decision] Understood. What would you need to see to make a decision either way?
[If stalled] Would it help if I joined a short call with [decision maker] to answer their questions directly? I have [time] on [day].
6. The referral call
[Listen] What I hear most from [type of business] is [problem]. Is that true for you as well?
[If yes] Would you be open to a 15 minute call this week so I can show you what we did for [referrer]?
7. The voicemail
Keep it under 30 seconds and give one reason to call back. Our voicemail script guide has 12 more templates.
Discovery questions that work on any sales call
- How are you handling [process] today?
- What made you look into this now, and not six months ago?
- What happens if nothing changes in the next quarter?
- How much time does [problem] take your team each week?
- What have you already tried, and what did not work?
- Who else would be involved in a decision like this?
- Is there a date by which this needs to be solved?
- If we fixed this, how would you measure that it worked?
Ask one at a time and let silence do some work. The answers become your value statement and your next step.
Answers to common sales call objections
| They say | A short answer |
|---|---|
| "I am busy right now." | Of course. Is it better if I call back this afternoon or tomorrow morning? (Then set the callback and keep it.) |
| "Just send me an email." | Happy to. So I send something useful and not a brochure, can I ask one quick question about how you handle [process] today? |
| "We already use [competitor]." | That is good to hear, they are a solid choice. What do you like most about it, and is there anything you wish it did better? |
| "It is too expensive." | I understand. Compared to what? If we look at what [problem] costs you today in time or lost deals, does the price still feel high? |
| "We are not interested." | Fair enough. Can I ask, is it the timing, or is [problem] just not a priority for you right now? |
| "Take me off your list." | Of course, I will remove your number today. (Then do it, for every rep on the team.) |
Calling rules to keep in mind
- Business and consumer calls are treated differently. In the United States, most business to business sales calls are not covered by the National Do Not Call Registry, but calls to consumers and to personal cell phones are. Many small business owners use a personal cell, so treat those numbers carefully.
- Keep an internal Do Not Call list. When anyone asks you to stop calling, add the number at once and make sure the whole team sees it.
- Calling hours. Federal law allows consumer sales calls from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the called person's time zone, and several states are stricter.
- Prerecorded messages and AI voices. Ringless voicemail and prerecorded or AI voice sales messages need prior written consent. A live rep on every answered call keeps you out of that category.
The full details, with a calling hours checker by state, are in our TCPA rules guide. In Canada, the CRTC's National Do Not Call List rules apply to consumer calls.
Quota to calls calculator
How many sales calls does your team need to make to hit its number? Enter your own figures. The default values are examples only: replace them with your real rates after a few weeks of tracking.
Try raising the connect rate or the meeting rate by a few points: a better list and a better script often cut the daily dials more than adding a rep. For benchmarks to compare with, see our cold calling statistics, and for staffing a larger team, the call center calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a sales call script?
A short written plan for a sales call: how you open, the questions you ask, how you answer common objections and the next step you ask for. Good scripts are guides to adapt, not text to read aloud.
How long should a sales call script be?
Short enough to fit on one screen. The opening should take about 10 seconds, and most of the call should be the prospect talking in answer to your questions.
What is the difference between a cold call script and a sales call script?
A cold call script is for the first call to someone who did not expect you. Sales call script is the wider term: it also covers inbound lead callbacks, discovery calls, demos, follow-ups and referral calls, each with a different goal.
Can I use these scripts in my team training?
Yes. You are welcome to copy the scripts into your playbook or share the calculator, as long as you link back to this page.
