Cold calling statistics for 2026, with real sources

The cold calling numbers that matter in 2026, each traced to its original study: success rates, best times to call, openers that work, why fewer people pick up, and a free dials to meetings calculator.

Most "cold calling statistics" pages repeat the same numbers with no source, or with a source that leads nowhere. This page is different: every number below links to the study it comes from, with the sample size and the year, so you can check it and quote it with confidence. We also say what each number means for a small sales team, and we flag the numbers that are getting old.

Last checked October 2026. We only list numbers we could trace to the original study or report. If a source is a vendor, we say so: vendor data is useful, but it describes that vendor's users, not every sales team.

Success rates and connect rates

  1. The average cold call success rate is 2.7%. Cognism's 2026 cold calling report, based on more than 200,000 calls made in 2025, puts the industry average at 2.7%, up from 2.3% in its previous report. "Success" here means the call led to a booked meeting. Source: Cognism.
  2. A good team can do four times better. In the same report, Cognism's own sales team reports an 11.3% success rate. It is a vendor's own number, but it shows how much list quality and practice change the result. Source: Cognism.
  3. It takes 1.55 calls on average to reach a prospect. Cognism reports 1.55 calls per prospect reached in its 2026 report, down from 2.9 in its previous report. Cognism sells verified phone data, so its users may reach people faster than a team working an average list: plan for more attempts. Source: Cognism.
  4. The average cold call lasts 82 seconds. Down from 93 seconds in the previous report. Most calls are short, so the first sentences matter. Source: Cognism.
  5. About half of sellers say a first connection takes 5 to 10 touches. In a RAIN Group study of 489 sellers, 52% said it takes five to 10 touches to reach a new prospect for the first time. Source: RAIN Group Center for Sales Research (2018).

What buyers say about cold outreach

  1. 82% of buyers accept meetings with sellers who reach out to them. RAIN Group surveyed 488 buyers. Cold outreach is not dead: buyers take meetings when the seller brings something useful. Source: RAIN Group (2018).
  2. 54% of buyers agreed to their last meeting after a phone call. In the same study, 58% said a seller connected by email and 54% by phone (buyers could name more than one channel). The phone is still close to email as a way to get a first meeting. Source: RAIN Group (2018).
  3. 71% of buyers want to hear from sellers early. Among buyers who accept meetings, 71% want to talk to sellers when they are looking for new ideas, and 62% when they are actively looking for a solution. Source: RAIN Group (2018).

What successful cold calls sound like

Gong analyzed 90,380 recorded cold calls (all first conversations) to see which openers lead to a booked meeting. The baseline success rate in that sample was 1.5%.

  1. "How have you been?" had a 10.01% success rate, 6.6 times the baseline. Source: Gong Labs.
  2. "How are you?" had a 5.2% success rate, 3.4 times the baseline. Source: Gong Labs.
  3. "Did I catch you at a bad time?" had a 0.9% success rate, which made reps 40% less likely to book a meeting. Source: Gong Labs.
  4. Stating the reason for your call raises the success rate 2.1 times. Source: Gong Labs.
  5. Successful cold calls are almost twice as long as unsuccessful ones, with 77% more speaker switches per minute: a real back and forth, not a pitch. Source: Gong Labs.
  6. In successful calls, prospects speak in short bursts: an average monologue of 3.5 seconds, against 8 seconds in unsuccessful calls. Source: Gong Labs.

Best time and day to cold call

  1. The best hour is 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Results are weaker before 9 a.m., after 4 p.m. and over lunch (12 p.m. to 1 p.m.). Source: Cognism (2026).
  2. Thursday is the best day, Friday the weakest. Tuesday has moved ahead of Wednesday as the second best day. Source: Cognism (2026).

These are times in the prospect's time zone. Calling hours are also regulated: federal law allows sales calls from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time, and several states are stricter. Check any state with the free checker in our TCPA rules guide.

Why fewer people pick up

  1. 80% of Americans generally do not answer calls from unknown numbers. Only 19% say they usually answer. Pew Research Center surveyed 10,211 US adults in July 2020. Source: Pew Research Center.
  2. Americans received about 2.56 billion spam robocalls a month in 2025, the highest level since 2019. Source: U.S. PIRG Education Fund, "Ringing in Our Fears 2025".
  3. About 57% of all robocalls are scam or telemarketing calls, according to YouMail data cited in the same report. This is why carriers label so many numbers "Spam Likely". Source: U.S. PIRG Education Fund.

If your own calls show a spam label, read why calls show as Scam Likely and how to fix it. A local, registered business number and a steady call pace help a lot.

Speed to lead: calling inbound leads

  1. Only 37% of companies answered a web lead within an hour. Harvard Business Review audited 2,241 US companies. 23% never answered at all, and the average response time was 42 hours. Source: Harvard Business Review (2011).
  2. Calling within an hour makes a lead nearly 7 times more likely to qualify than calling an hour later, and more than 60 times more likely than waiting 24 hours or longer. Source: Harvard Business Review (2011).

The HBR and RAIN Group studies are older than the others. We keep them because no newer study with a similar sample has replaced them, and their main lesson (respond fast, reach out first) still holds.

Rules that come with the numbers

  1. 3% abandoned call cap in the US. Predictive dialers must keep abandoned calls at or below 3% of answered calls per campaign over 30 days. In Canada, the CRTC cap is 5% of calls placed per calendar month. Details in our predictive dialer guide.
  2. $500 to $1,500 per call. That is what a consumer can claim for each call or text that breaks the TCPA, which is why one bad list can turn into a class action. See the TCPA rules guide.

Cold calling math: dials to meetings calculator

Statistics are averages. Put in your own numbers to see how many dials, conversations and meetings a rep needs to hit a goal. The default values are examples only: replace them with your team's real rates.

What these numbers mean for a small team

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cold calling success rate?

Cognism's 2026 report puts the average at 2.7% of calls leading to a meeting. Teams with verified mobile numbers and good scripts report 10% or more. Compare yourself with your own past results first: list quality changes everything.

Is cold calling still effective in 2026?

Yes for many B2B and local businesses. 82% of buyers in the RAIN Group study accepted meetings with sellers who reached out first, and 54% agreed to their last meeting after a phone call. What changed is that fewer people answer unknown numbers, so caller ID, timing and persistence matter more.

How many calls does it take to reach a prospect?

Cognism reports 1.55 calls on average among the teams it measured (a vendor of verified phone data), while 52% of sellers in the RAIN Group study say a first connection takes 5 to 10 touches across channels. Plan for several attempts spread over different days and times.

Can I use these statistics?

Yes. You are welcome to quote any number on this page, embed the table in your own article or deck, and share the calculator. Please link back to this page and keep the link to the original source.
